ABOUT THE LOHP HAZARDOUS WASTE PROJECT

LOHP’s Hazardous Waste Project has trained many thousands of workers in English and Spanish since 1987. We offer innovative hands-on classes that comply with federal and state training requirements. Classes include:

  • 8-hour Annual HAZWOPER Refresher
  • 24-hour Hazardous Waste Operations

Our team of instructors is made up of certified industrial hygienists and health educators with years of experience and outstanding teaching skills. Class topics include:

  • Hazardous materials
  • Hazardous waste operations
  • Emergency response

Classes are small in size and emphasize problem-solving and simulated field activities.

We also offer introductory 4-hour Hazard Awareness classes that comply with Cal/OSHA’s Hazard Communication standard (GISO 5194) and Injury and Illness Prevention Program standard (GISO 3203). Topics include identifying and controlling hazards, labeling, and MSDSs.

WHO NEEDS THIS TRAINING?

According to federal OSHA regulation 29 CFR §1910.120 and Cal/OSHA GISO 5192, workers involved in hazardous waste treatment, storage, or disposal (TSD) must attend a 24-hour TSD course when they begin work, and an 8-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Refresher course each year.

It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend these courses. LOHP courses meet the training requirements of these regulations.

CURRICULA ONLINE

LOHP’s hazardous waste curricula are available online in both English and Spanish.

FEES FOR CLASSES

8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher classes are $100 per person. 24-hour Hazardous Waste Operations classes are $300 per person. Classes are subsidized by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

HAZARD AWARENESS CLASSES

LOHP also offers on-site, 4-hour Hazard Awareness classes for small facilities, in English or Spanish. Courses require a minimum of 12 employees. Rates are $10 per person for the standard curriculum and $50 per person for a site-specific curriculum. Please contact LOHP for more information.

LOHP is a member of the Western Region Universities Consortium (WRUC), which offers hazardous waste training throughout California, Arizona, Washington, Nevada, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands. The WRUC is funded by a grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
