Workers concerned about lack of protection

Denise Barlage, a worker at Smart & Final, is very concerned about her safety and also about protecting her family. Since her employer is not providing supplies, she buys a box of gloves and hand sanitizers and distributes these to her coworkers. In addition, workers are concerned about no distancing, too many people in store, no enforcement of mask wearing for customers, no time for handwashing, and no notification of COVID-19 exposure.

In honor of our 50th anniversary, LOHP is highlighting landmark moments in our history and in the history of the fight for safe jobs, healthy lives, and worker justice. This week we remember LOHP’s work during the COVID-19 pandemic to support worker organizations with training, research and policy support. LOHP played a key role responding to partner requests when so much was uncertain about COVID-19 and organizations needed guidance to ensure workers were protected. We created a comprehensive online resource page and carried out webinars in English and Spanish to provide the latest information on the virus, transmission, and protecting essential workers. As a workers’ rights program that is part of @berkeleypublichealth, we researched, evaluated and filtered information to make sure concrete and up-to-date recommendations were available for workers and advocates. We also worked with advocates to push for strong Cal/OSHA protections. We joined the first California CWOP statewide network funded (COVID-19 Workplace Outreach Project) and provided resources and capacity-building programs for the community organizations that were part of the trusted messenger network, educating low-wage workers in industries that were disproportionately affected by the pandemic.Today, we are part of CWOP 4.0—this time administering the Bay Area and Sacramento Regions and continuing to be a resource for multilingual training and technical assistance about labor rights and COVID-19. CWOP is now expanding beyond COVID to address a range of issues impacting workers in California including wage and hour, health and safety, the right to paid sick leave and protection from retaliation, discrimination and harassment. The CWOP model of working with trusted messengers has had tremendous impact, and we are proud to be able to leverage the expertise and resources of our program in support of this critical work. This week we remember the first California heat illness campaign to reduce heat-related fatalities and illnesses among non-English-speaking outdoor workers. These resources are available at 99calor.org in English, Spanish, Hmong, and Punjabi, with video also in Mixteco and Triqui.LOHP managed the development and implementation of this campaign including media assets and a community education that engaged local organizations to train and provide support to workers in their communities. The campaign was adopted by Federal OSHA and implemented across the country.
