Second outbreak at the Foster Farms plant

Merced County Department of Public Health declares a second COVID-19 outbreak at the Foster Farms Livingston plant. The count of Foster Farm worker deaths rises to 12. A judge issues a ruling on a case brought by the UFW, and lists 20 requirements for the company to comply with, including COVID-19 protective measures and training in English, Spanish and Punjabi.

This week we highlight the Young Worker Project. Millions of teens are working in the United States. However, many don’t know about their rights on the job and thousands are injured each year. LOHP has been working to protect the safety of working teens for almost 30 years (!).Today, in collaboration with the California Partnership for Young Worker Health and Safety, LOHP hosts youngworkers.org, a web resource for working teens, parents, and educators to understand workplace safety, rights, and responsibilities. LOHP also coordinates the Safe Jobs for Youth Month campaign each May and a Young Worker Leadership Academy in the winter. LOHP - Labor Occupational Health Program

Elijah Placides is a student at San Jose University. He came to the US from the Philippines at age 14. This year he participated in the Occupational Health Summer Internship Program (OHIP). OHIP helps young people learn about the field of occupational safety and health from those with most at stake: working people. Placides worked with the Pilipino Association of Workers and Immigrants (PAWIS) to interview caregivers at residential facilities in Santa Clara County to better understand their working conditions, results that will be shared with Santa Clara County. This week we remember the establishment of The National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences Worker Training Program.
