In honor of our 50th anniversary, LOHP is highlighting landmark moments in our org’s history and in the history of the fight for safe jobs, healthy lives, and worker justice. This week we highlight the Young Worker Project. Millions of teens are working in the United States. However, many don’t know about their rights on the job and thousands are injured each year. LOHP has been working to protect the safety of working teens for almost 30 years (!).Today, in collaboration with the California Partnership for Young Worker Health and Safety, LOHP hosts youngworkers.org, a web resource for working teens, parents, and educators to understand workplace safety, rights, and responsibilities. LOHP also coordinates the Safe Jobs for Youth Month campaign each May and a Young Worker Leadership Academy in the winter. LOHP - Labor Occupational Health Program

Elijah Placides is a student at San Jose University. He came to the US from the Philippines at age 14. This year he participated in the Occupational Health Summer Internship Program (OHIP). OHIP helps young people learn about the field of occupational safety and health from those with most at stake: working people. Placides worked with the Pilipino Association of Workers and Immigrants (PAWIS) to interview caregivers at residential facilities in Santa Clara County to better understand their working conditions, results that will be shared with Santa Clara County. As a Pilipino immigrant himself, participating in the project was “really grounding.” Placides said it helped him connect to the Pilipino community, his family, and to see pathways forward to fight for change.LOHP hosts public health interns every summer, and runs the Bay Area program site to build a pipeline of public health leaders like Placides committed to occupational health and safety.Learn more ohipintern.org📷@joycexiphotography#safejobstogether #lohp50 @pawissouthbay @ohip.aoec ...
