Our own Dr. Monique Hosein is back from #APHA2024 where she won an award from the Occupational Health and Safety Section as a new practitioner for her poster on the Research to Practice (R2P) Toolkit for research teams.The R2P toolkit is a practical guide and planning tool to help research teams:1) create a plan to identify and engage key stakeholders early in the research process, and2) develop a research-to-action strategy to disseminate their most significantpotential findings and recommended action.LOHP collaborated with @ucberkeleycoeh and The California Labor Lab to develop this updated toolkit. We had a blast this weekend training workers from the laundry division with Workers United, Western States Regional Joint Board. Our 3-day training covered how to make their workplaces safer, with an emphasis on chemicals, ergonomics and heat - the three biggest hazards these workers face on the job. LOHP Coordinators Tenaya and Alejandra covered how to ID underlying causes of injuries and illnesses at work, the best solutions to health and safety issues, workers' legal rights - including those under Cali's new Indoor Heat Standard, and strategies for taking action. This was part of WOSHTEP, a training program that prepares workers for leadership roles in the workplaces to reduce job-related injuries and illnesses. Industrial laundry workers described increasingly facing extreme heat as a result of climate change and due to their particular conditions (lack of AC and ventilation in most buildings, plus radiant heat sources like washers, dryers, and irons.)
