LOHP - Labor Occupational Health Program

Elijah Placides is a student at San Jose University. He came to the US from the Philippines at age 14. This year he participated in the Occupational Health Summer Internship Program (OHIP). OHIP helps young people learn about the field of occupational safety and health from those with most at stake: working people. Placides worked with the Pilipino Association of Workers and Immigrants (PAWIS) to interview caregivers at residential facilities in Santa Clara County to better understand their working conditions, results that will be shared with Santa Clara County. As a Pilipino immigrant himself, participating in the project was “really grounding.” Placides said it helped him connect to the Pilipino community, his family, and to see pathways forward to fight for change.LOHP hosts public health interns every summer, and runs the Bay Area program site to build a pipeline of public health leaders like Placides committed to occupational health and safety.Learn more ohipintern.org📷@joycexiphotography#safejobstogether #lohp50 @pawissouthbay @ohip.aoec ... In honor of our 50th anniversary, LOHP is highlighting landmark moments in our org’s history and in the history of the fight for safe jobs, healthy lives, and worker justice. This week we remember the establishment of The National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences Worker Training Program. First established as part of early environmental legislation to protect workers cleaning up superfund sites, the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training, known as “HAZWOPER,” supports workers who handle or clean up hazardous or biological waste, respond to emergency releases of hazardous materials, or respond to natural or manmade disasters.Today, LOHP continues to offer HAZWOPER training and, in the era of climate change, LOHP develops community-based programs in English and Spanish to train workers in disaster preparedness and emergency response. #SafeJobsTogether #LOHP50 ... As a domestic worker, Guillermina Castellanos experienced the effects of cleaning with toxic chemicals. She knows workers who were injured on the job from falls or lifting elderly patients. And, as the climate crisis intensifies, she knows workers who were being asked to clean up after wildfires, inhaling ash and getting sick.Castellanos has worked closely with LOHP to develop peer leader training so domestic workers themselves can engage in training others on how to work safely and speak to their employers to negotiate for the supplies and support they need. As the co-founder of La Colectiva de Mujeres, Castellanos worked with LOHP to develop the Communicating Our Power and Hope Campaign to elevate the dignity and power of domestic workers and to communicate this work as a critical component of our economy. Images and stories from that campaign were used in state and national advocacy and worker leaders were trained to be spokespeople to speak out about the need for change. “I’m so proud of everything we have done together, truly to save lives,” Castellanos said.#SafeJobsTogether #LOHP50#HealthAndSafety #myhealthmydignity 📷 @joycexiphotography...Como trabajadora doméstica, Guillermina Castellanos ha experimentado los efectos de los productos tóxicos de limpieza y conoce a trabajadoras que se han lesionado al caerse o al levantar a pacientes mayores. A medida que la crisis climática se intensifica ha visto como se les ha pedido a las trabajadoras que limpien después de los incendios forestales, inhalando cenizas y enfermándose.Castellanos ha trabajado con LOHP para desarrollar capacitación de líderes para que las trabajadoras mismas entrenen a otras mujeres sobre cómo trabajar de manera segura y hablar con sus empleadores para negociar por el equipo y el apoyo necesario.Como cofundadora de La Colectiva de Mujeres, Castellanos trabajó con LOHP para desarrollar la campaña Comunicando Poder y Esperanza para elevar la dignidad y el poder de las trabajadoras domésticas y enfatizar cómo este trabajo es un componente crítico de nuestra economía. Las imágenes e historias de esa campaña fueron usadas para abogar a nivel federal y estatal.
