Almost half of all American adults—90 million—struggle with basic reading, math, and reasoning skills. For example, many workers cannot understand the information in a Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), a key source of information about chemical hazards on the job.
This resource was developed to:
- Introduce health and safety trainers to the experiences and training needs of workers with limited literacy skills.
- Provide trainers with tools and practical tips for developing materials and programs with literacy in mind.
It includes literacy definitions and statistics, tips for gathering literacy information on your training audience, how to write and design easy-to-read training materials, examples of nine different training methods, and resource lists for further information. There are also stories from workers and trainers about their experiences with literacy issues.
