ROC-LA gets a city grant through the PHC program to build worker leadership in restaurants. ROC-LA goes through the process to become one of the Certified Worker Organizations that supports public health councils. This involves providing training on hazards, communicating with workers, navigating the public health system, and filing complaints.

In honor of our 50th anniversary, LOHP is highlighting landmark moments in our org’s history and in the history of the fight for safe jobs, healthy lives, and worker justice. This week we highlight the Young Worker Project. Millions of teens are working in the United States. However, many don’t know about their rights on the job and thousands are injured each year. LOHP has been working to protect the safety of working teens for almost 30 years (!).Today, in collaboration with the California Partnership for Young Worker Health and Safety, LOHP hosts youngworkers.org, a web resource for working teens, parents, and educators to understand workplace safety, rights, and responsibilities. LOHP also coordinates the Safe Jobs for Youth Month campaign each May and a Young Worker Leadership Academy in the winter. LOHP - Labor Occupational Health Program

Elijah Placides is a student at San Jose University. He came to the US from the Philippines at age 14. This year he participated in the Occupational Health Summer Internship Program (OHIP). OHIP helps young people learn about the field of occupational safety and health from those with most at stake: working people. Placides worked with the Pilipino Association of Workers and Immigrants (PAWIS) to interview caregivers at residential facilities in Santa Clara County to better understand their working conditions, results that will be shared with Santa Clara County. This week we remember the establishment of The National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences Worker Training Program. First established as part of early environmental legislation to protect workers cleaning up superfund sites, the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training, known as “HAZWOPER,” supports workers who handle or clean up hazardous or biological waste, respond to emergency releases of hazardous materials, or respond to natural or manmade disasters.Today, LOHP continues to offer HAZWOPER training and, in the era of climate change, LOHP develops community-based programs in English and Spanish to train workers in disaster preparedness and emergency response. #SafeJobsTogether #LOHP50 ...
